I know the 80’s are back but….

The purpose of my blog is to keep you updated with the latest happenings in the floral industry.

I’ve gotten to know a lot of people in the floral industry over the last few years (thank you Facebook!). Cathy over at Sprout in Massachusetts has a fantastic blog. She puts it so eloquently:

“When there are so many fabulous wrist corsage bracelets, that are pretty enough to wear on their own as jewelry, why would you ever choose to have yours made on a granny panty elastic band?

Demand something better!
No more granny panty elastic bands for prom!”
She attached this picture to the caption
Can you spot the granny panty elastic band?? Yes, the 80’s are back, but let’s not take it too far, folks. With all the AMAZING options for corsages at Pizazz! Florals, why would you ever settle for the old school prom corsage?? (yikes!!! lol) Put an end to the granny panty wrist bands!
Awwwwkward. Let’s keep prom and graduation modern and cool! (Do the kids still say cool? Okay, if not, we’ll make it EPIC!) And if your date orders a corsage for you, don’t worry. We won’t let him go the granny panty route :o)

Mallory and Wes’ January Wedding

I received some pictures from Jessica Lally Photography from a wedding that we did back in January. It was beautiful and sparkly and everything a blingy wedding should be! Mallory didn’t have an exact vision of what she wanted so she let the designer, Pat, have a creative license.

I delivered the wedding myself and when the bride opened the box, she exclaimed “Oh LOOK!”

She loved it!! They were so kind and came back and gave Pat a big ol’ hug a few weeks after the wedding.

Thanks to Mallory and Wes for letting us share in their special day. And thanks again to Jessica Lally for the beautiful pictures :o)

And here are some pictures I took of the bride receiving her flowers and my artsy close up of the bouquet :o)

We’ll be back on Monday with a contest for your mama :o) You don’t want to miss it!

Why do roses cost more on Valentine’s Day?

Everyone knows that the week of Valentine’s Day the cost of roses will increase quite a bit. I always get one gentleman who will yell at me over the price insisting that we’re trying to gouge customers out of their hard-earned money.

Ouch.

That hurts. I have trouble not taking it personally because I would hate that a customer or anyone would ever think that way of us.

So I’m going to set the record straight.

Why do roses cost more on Valentine’s Day?

The supply chain of flowers goes through many steps.

Grower Level:

The growers have to set aside room to grow 198 million roses for Valentine’s Day. They have to time the roses just right so that they’re ready to bloom for the big day. They sit on millions of empty acres waiting for the right time to plant. Once it’s time to harvest, it all has to happen within a few days. They bring in extra people to cut all the flowers. It’s all done by hand not machine. They, then, need to hire extra planes to fly it all into the USA.

Shipping Level:

The shippers need to hire extra people to process all the incoming roses. They need to hire extra planes and trucks to fly and ship the product all over North America.

Wholesale Level:

The Wholesalers again need to hire extra people to help with the massive amount of roses incoming. They hire more trucks and delivery drivers. They rent huge coolers to store the excess flowers in.

Retailer Level (That’s us!):

By the time the roses get to us, our cost to purchase has more than tripled from January. We only double the price, not triple it, because we aren’t out to gouge people, like I said before. We hire 4 extra delivery drivers and rental vans for the big day. We have 9 – 10 staff working instead of the usual 4 – 5. We try to keep our costs down as much as possible so that we can afford to give the best possible deal on roses that we can. (Think of the water we have to put in all those buckets. Last February, our hydro and water bill was over $1000!!)

So I hope that helps people understand how much effort and time goes into producing all those roses for Valentine’s Day! If everyone wanted to work for free the prices would stay the same, but weirdly enough people want to get paid for their time and that means that the price will go up!

There are some other flowers that you can get valentine’s day that would be just as beautiful! She’ll enjoy anything as long as it comes from the heart.

The Wedding Show

It’s no secret that we love to do weddings!

A few years ago not many people knew that we offered wedding flowers as well as all the other awesome stuff we do. So after a few long discussions, we decided to enter the 2009 Wedding show.

Best. Decision. Ever.

Our wedding business grew by leaps and bounds in just that one year following the show. So many brides were excited to learn that their favourite florist could also do their wedding! Then we found out our prices were WAY to high for Chatham, so we lowered them! (I think we’ve got to be the only place LOWERING our prices! haha)

We had a booth in last weekends wedding show and it was a huge success! If you were there, you got to see some of the colourful bouquets that we made up.

If you weren’t, this is your lucky day! I’ve got ALL the bouquets here for you to see.

Be SURE to like our facebook page because I’ve got lots of pictures of our work over there.

Pretty, no?

Call me today to book your consultation. 519-351-2654 or email us: pizazz.florals [at] bellnet.ca

You should have your wedding florist booked about four to six months before you wedding date.
